quick and easy homemade veggie burger recipe. serves 2-3.

half package of firm-extra firm tofu
2 table spoons of flour
2 table spoons of soy sauce
three green onions (minced)
1/2 cup cut mushrooms
2 tablespoons of whole peppercorn
2 cloves garlic (minced)
lawrys seasoning salt to taste (about 1 or 2 tablespoons)
olive oil
pita bread

combine and mash tofu in bowl, while adding ingredients - flour, season salt, soy sauce, peppercorn, garlic, green onions, mushies. (all vegetables finely diced / minced)
heat olive oil in pan, form patties to desired size and start fryin. cook covered and on medium heat. getting the patties to 'stay together' is kind of tricky. after some trial and error i have found the easiest way is to let it fall apart a little for the first five minutes of cooking (flip after a couple minutes on each side). this lets more surface area of the patty to become that cooked golden brown. after about five minutes of this used the spatula to try and keep a little more shape. then cook about 3-4 minutes on each side.
once the outside of the patty looks like it has a yummy crispiness to it, remove from heat. you can doctor it up like a burger (i.e. buns, lettuce, tomato, ketchup etc), pita sandwich (a lettuce, tomato, hummus, sprouts), or any crazy combination you can think of. The other day I stuffed it in a pita along with some tomato slices, some alfalfa sprouts, some feta, and a leeeetle bit of *rasberry chipotle sauce*. DELICIOUS.

(This recipe is made from purely my own trial and error. I have no idea if this is the correct way to cook, but i also dont really care.)

Scene 4Busty - Take 1

Yesterday I was woken up to my friend Kate Hull-Nye - "Wake up Erin, I need an A.C. for the hooker film today, we're going to the Tenderloin." Needless to say I jumped right up (soon realizing I had had one too many glasses of Zinfandel the night before).
Kate works with film for all of her movies, This particular film she was shooting with Super 8 for the first time. A big part of her composition of the filming has to do with bright colors, as you can see by the lighting/costumes/backgrounds in the pictures I took below, which are going to be stunning once the film is developed!
After dressing Elena in 7 inch heels, fishnets, an orange 90's halter, black leather shorts, and one groovy afro, I grabbed elenas canon rebel and we made our way to the alley behind Edinburgh Castle (a bar in the T.L.) to meet the sound guy Curtis. Kate and Curtis explained to me how to organize the scene/take records and how to manage the slate.

Elena is an amazing actress/model and also one of my seven roommates in the flat. Her rendition of "Annabelle the hooker" was grand, and was worthy of all the whistles she got from the tenderloin locdawgs - ha ha.

After we wrapped up the street scenes we got in Kate's silver toaster car and headed to Port Costa. It was an odd little town that kind of reminded me of Spectre, the town in big fish, via Edward Bloom's return. After meeting Morgan and Mark, who were helping Kate with the lighting (which was AMAZING) we shot in a creaky hotel that was once a brothel. All of the rooms had prostitute names instead of room numbers - Kate had reserved 'Victoria'.
After shooting about four scenes, the (completely sweat soaked) six of us packed up our gear at 1:15 A.M. and headed home - we had been filming for twelve hours. The feeling I had on the way home was euphoric. I felt like I had been a part of something of artistic importance, I was excited. I'm serving as Assistant Cameraman for the rest of the filming, and I cannot express how fucking stoked I am. Kate is an awesome director of photography and I am truly inspired by her eye for composition. Who knows, maybe this whole film production idea will become a new medium of interest for me...

The Ballad of Sexual Dependency

Today I found out about Nan Goldin, a photographer who began her documentary photography career in the late 1960's/early 1970's. Her first solo show was in 1973 at twenty years old. It showcased her unique snapshots of the gay and transsexual communities she experienced in boston, her hometown. She moved to New York City after finishing school, and took an interest in being apart of the post-stonewall riots gay subculture, the post-punk new-wave scene, the Bowery's hard-drug subculture. Goldin used these subcultures as the foundation for her collection of photographs taken between 1979-1986 entitled "The Balled of Sexual Dependency", taken from the musical "Threepenny opera". Her unbelievably heavy photographs portray everything from Heroin addiction, drag-queens, dysfunctional lovers, and AIDS victims. I encourage you to really take in her photos seperately, you might be surprised by how profound they truly are.

"The Cookie Diaries" is a series of photographs that documents Goldin's relationship with friend Cookie Mueller, who died of AIDS in 1989. Goldin describes her first impression of Cookie as a "cross between a Tobacco Road Outlaw and a Hollywood B-Girl, the most famous women I'd ever seen." Besides being an artist, actress, mom, Heroin addict, and wife, Cookie was a friend of Goldin's for over 13 years, over which time Goldin took many pictures of Cookie. Through these photographs, the women became close friends.

I have been a resident of this wonderful city we call san francisco for over one week now. The passed nine days have been overflowing with wine, BBQ, new faces, whiskey bars, karaoke, job hunting, delores park, sunburnt skin, walking, six girls + one flat, walking, pandora, more walking, strange coincidences, cooking, new ideas, and true community. This is literally the happiest I have felt in my life, which is why I have been keeping so busy that I haven't posted anything in a considerable amount of time. In 1992, at the age of 12, Japanese-Canadian Severn Cullis-Suzuki raised money with members of ECO, to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Along with group members Michelle Quigg, Vanessa Suttie, and Morgan Geisler, Cullis-Suzuki presented environmental issues from a youth perspective at the summit, where she was applauded for a speech to the delegates.

This young lady is now in her thirties. She is almost exactly ten years older than I am. im nearly twenty and I find it nauseating to realize that I can agree with this girl eighteen years later. Now I'm rolling around the idea in my head that if I ever have a child, and when I show them this speech, they will be able to relate the same way we do. Is there some arbitrary turning we have had along the way that made us worse off than we could be today?

here is a quote from Suzuki's book that has a more positive outlook on the potential of this generation:

"There are … so many amazing things happening right now…..

I’ve met a couple of people lately who have a very interesting attitude. They [said], “How lucky are we? How exciting is this time? How lucky are we to be alive when the forces of good and evil are just so clear, when we’re undergoing such a massive time of shift and when our actions really, really matter, for good or for bad?”

This is a really unique period in history and it’s a time when an individual can have more impact than ever before in our human history because of the Internet, because of communication, because of how easily we can travel. … We really have to realize how empowered we can be, how much we actually matter."

in 2007 I had started a job in high school at a venue that we all know as chain reaction. A few of the security guards I became friends with educated me about street and graffiti art, as they avidly practiced the craft themselves. Since then I have studied street art religiously. When driving in LA county my gaze is glued to every overpass, my eyes going over as many tags that can catch my eye in those few seconds. I have discovered many street artists that I have fallen in love with through the knowledge gained by observing the graffiti world. SWOON is one of them. I first disovered the artist SWOON when I purchased the book in the street world series, "Graffiti Women". A native of Florida, SWOON has lived and breathed new york city for some years now. Her work is truly inspiring to me, she is one of my favorite artists. A couple months ago on my last trip to San Francisco, I was excited to witness my first SWOON sighting - A beautiful portrait wheatpaste of a girl in an alley filled with other familiar street art, located in the mission district.

Today I purchased SWOON's recent book of her work and thoughts. I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it for the last 2 hours.

"When I first began to do street work, part of my impulse had to do with those things that are meant to disappear and the ability to just let things go. I use recycled newsprint that I order in 90-pound rolls. It’s extremely thin and is one of my favorite papers to use because of the way it decays. It yellows. It cracks. It has this whole life cycle that I really like.”

yet another san francisco trip last weekend. i can never pass up an opportunity to go to my favorite place. music, my boys, my girls, mick j. the pup, delores park, the alley, castro, mission, park merced, and some red red wine. and of course two days spent alone in the city with my best companions, my cameras. once i develop all of my film into prints ill put my scanner to use.
after spending some time on saturday in delores park, my friends took me to an alley in the mission, full of AMAZING street artists work (including one of my most inspiring - swoon).
i spent half of sunday with an amazing new friend. or rather he made friends with me, in golden gate park while i was eating lunch across the field from hippie hill. a true vagabond, steven i hope we meet again someday.

I don't think I will ever limit myself to the title of "photographer". My creativity can be thrown in so many different ballparks, i love doing and thinking about every possibility. Even though no art is original, it takes a clearminded person to think of a new combination of the obvious elements of art, this is how I strive to channel my creative thoughts.
Last week I was walking around in michael's and discovered the aisle 7A - 'adhesives, finishes, goldleaf products'! I found myself standing in front of a plethera of gold-leaf, variegated green leaf, gold-leaf flakes, variegated red, variegated dawn, copper-leaf, silver-leaf flakes, etc. etc. etc....needless to say i never thought i would find such an interest in packaged micro thin sheets of metallic composition metal. though i am well aware i am not the christopher columbus of the gold-leafing world, this just goes to show that the possibilities of your artistic endeavors are endless.

this week I was reminded of the wonderful work of san francisco native: sylvia ji, one of my personal favorites. in her paintings of elegant women she hints a decaying and mysterious beauty. and not to mention her amazing use of technique, each portrait are flawless. so there you have it, a creative series of subjects plus some good olfashioned brush talent and voi'la, you have got yourself one hell of an artist. one of her day of the dead ladies would make for a rad tattoo...

im taking an experimental painting class at school, taught by tom dowling (and yes i confirmed it is in fact tattoo artist colin dowling's father). we learned about a few artists in our first lecture, including street artist barry mcgee who i took interest to.

ART:21: You seem to be very interested in the history of graffiti, as something that's been happening since ancient times.

MCGEE: "Of course, if I see something, I know it's something that everyone does and have done for centuries upon centuries. The thing that I'm interested in now is the idea of getting rid of it, this war on getting rid of it, and this idea of silencing it or trying to get rid of something. To me, that's the more interesting thing: how in today's climate there can be huge billboards and bus stop kiosks with advertising, and then along comes like a simple tag or something that someone does on it, and that thing is immediately removed overnight. To me, that's what is really interesting about the whole thing now. It's about the idea of public space and how people can function in public space anywhere. It's gotten tighter and tighter, since the Reagan-Bush era - the idea of private space and who can go into this space or a park - what is considered a park now. As those things get tighter and tighter and privately owned property and surveillance and what not is increased, so is this thing on the street. It also increases too for some odd reason. And I'm not exactly sure why it's that way, but I find it really interesting how quickly they want to get rid of this thing. There could be a rooftop that is just sitting dormant for a while, and someone goes up there and does an amazing piece of graffiti or whatever you want to call it. And then that's removed and two months later there's a huge billboard over the whole spot anyway.
So it has to do with money and who has access to space. And when I feel like the access to space is cut off for the general public, I feel like that makes me want to do stuff on the street even that much more. And the stuff in the galleries is just arty. The art crowd is arty, and it's the same people. Sometimes I feel like if I do something indoors, my circle of people that sees things is getting smaller and smaller, where if I'm outdoors it's open to anyone to look at, or see or hate or whatnot. But doing stuff indoors - there's some good things about it, but I know the audience is very limited."

we also learned about margaret kilgallen, barry's wife. in the pbs video we watched, called "art 21", it showcased mcgee and kilgallen working on their art together. including but not limited to a pleasant scene, a few minutes long, of the husband and wife in a trainyard making some magic with a couple of markers. after the video mr. dowling informed us that a couple years after the video was made, margaret died of cancer in 2001. It was very interesting and sad to watch an artist create beautiful art for a five minutes on a TV screen and then learn that they are actually six feet under, today. Imagine becoming immersed in a video of monet working on his amazing waterlily paintings, only to learn a few minutes after that this sacredly creative soul is gone. kind of a strange feeling.

yesterday i rescued me and becca's beautiful cat ninja (yes same ninja we raised on 25th st) and brought her home after hearing ideas of taking her to the pound (HELL NAH) and some negative allegations from warehouse residents. she is very happy now :)

last week we arrived in santa cruz, where we stayed in a friends cute little white house not far from the ocean. I met a few amazing people while i was there, including a couple crazyass vatos, chango and banda. our second day in santa cruz some people came over the house's garage turned art studio to sip on some red red wine and eventually watch the prep for josh's board to be painted by chango that night, which turned out RAD. we cruised up to the city and spent a few days exploring...shopping on haight (which brought me to the most amazing fur coat in existence), large ammounts of sangria at cha cha chas, the chug pub, watching insane men surf under the golden gate bridge at fort point, and watching some jazz hip hop at a bar in the mission. on the trek back down to the south we stopped in santa cruz for one more night of good people and wine...and tattoos by chango...

An acquaintance of mine, Sebastian Karim, was just published on moleskine.com for his rad daily journal drawings he has been creating for a couple years (i think?) or so. the other day, before I knew he had been published on the site, I had a dream that I was looking through his books and interpreting all of the beautiful illustrations and fonts strewn across each page. The dream wasn't one of those long, elaborate dreams, i only remember flipping through the pages and feeling many different things as i saw the people in the pictures moving and the words flowing off the page and making sounds. it was crazy. and the craziest part is the next day, when i told him about my dream, i was informed that he got published on the website! anyway, here are some of his drawings from the seven volumes of moleskines he has made...

trekked it up to mammoth for new years eve plans and had a way better time than i expected...20 new friends from all different places stayed at eddie wall's beautiful house in mammoth and made some pretty crazyass memories. on new years eve's eve we all just kicked it and got shwastey playing murderball(those are the snapshots in the garage), and new years eve was the huge party at canyon lodge (wish i remembered more of that..)...next night we partied at whiskey creek, yes the place my parents partied at on the reg back in the day, wierd. and last night we picked up some beers and went to the hot springs until 2 am lets just say the 200 foot walk back to the car in the snow was the most freezing i have ever been in my life...all in all the trip was successful, no douggles were present, and i was able to gypsy a ride there AND back home. radical.

last night i had an odd dream. Im sure there was more to the foreground of the dream but i did the whole half-wake-up-then-go-back-to-sleep-and-have-the-rest-of-the-dream thing. anyway, I found myself in a huge bathroom. im talking mansion of all mansions, this place beat hearst castle. There were huge columns with shades of blue mosaic tile that supported the what must have been 30 foot high ceiling. and bonsai trees everywhere, my favorite. there was a shower that was at one side of the room that was totally open and had a little river wrapping down from the platform it was on to the lower end of the room. the bathtub was as deep and about as wide as a normal pool. the mirror took up almost the entire back wall, and below it were a bunch of humongous seashell shaped sinks. dreams are really hard to explain sometimes but this place was fucking insane. I was pretty aware in this dream, i walked around, jumped on things, took my clothes off and went swimming in this crazy lagoon of a bathroom. I woke up wishing that i lived in a palace similar to that. Then I quickly looked around, and remembered the 500 dollar room in a house in downtown santa ana that I looked at yesterday to rent, and quickly came back to reality to say the least. im trying to wonder why i would have this dream? or even if there is a reason?
a couple months ago I had my first completely lucid SERIES of dreams, like four sleeping sessions in a row. in all of these dreams I would walk to this sort of warehouse like thing, and inside there were tons of people who appeared also to be aware of this dream world. everyone (like thirty people?) was literally just hanging out. there was a huge stage, people talking, playing music, lights, stuff on the walls. although this could have been shedding light on the warehouse becca, brad, chris, mahea, and devon moved into about a month ago, when I woke up, all i could think about was how i wanted to fall asleep so i could escape into this parallel world where I didnt remember having anything to worry about.

I think if I could sit at a round table, sip on wine and talk post modern art with any photographer it would be Cindy Sherman. people ask why she constantly did these odd projects to make this archive of photos, she usually comes back with a simple reply - "Because, I like it". It is an empowering thing for a woman to create something for sheer self-pleasure and get such a positive response from both men and women in society. in other words shes a badass. When you look at each one of these pictures you can completely form a completely plausible story for each one.

I think the deciding moment that I became appreciative and interested in street art was when I was about twelve. At this time I was living in Corona with the Cuff family. Every day on my way to and from jr. high I would drive up and down green river road, where there was a wheat paste of a contrasted black and white photo of George W. Bush. This was around the time when the public eye's notion of the president was starting to plummet. On the wheat paste, there were no derogatory or clever string of words, it was simply a picture on a yellow, diamond shaped street sign. What was interesting was the not-so-appealing scenery surrounding the President - cracked concrete, overgrown weeds everywhere, an almost deserted and run-down shopping center, dirt, train tracks, abandoned cars. That thing had to be there for at least a year and a half, and the scenes engulfing this picture were always changing but always were about the same theme - neglect. I'm sure there are many other takes on what the message of that picture was, but I always thought this idea to be quite intriguing to my young and naive thoughts when I was twelve years old.

On another note, Last week I got a job from a friend of mine (Stephanie Weber) to shoot an event for lightning bolt, a clothing company that originated in Hawaii during the 1970's. I trekked up to Los Feliz with Brit, Sheshwan, Brad, and Becca (they worked the bar and modeled the clothes) and spent an awesome night in LA. Brit and Bec had a great time in their outfits ha ha...

Went to San Francisco last weekend and it was so amazing. There was a group of about 18 people staying at my best friend, Ida's, house in park merced so you can imagine how crazy the weekend was. We got outside of love fest, and me and Becca being as obliterated as we were, somehow frolicked away from everyone before we even got in. about ten minutes later we realized becca's sister had all of our belongings and money to get in. Try to imagine two heavily intoxicated, giggling, blonde girls running around union square trying to figure out a way we could get in.
At one point, we looked up and saw a line of floats rolling down the street about to go in the back gate - so we made a run for it. Jumped on a float seconds before it crossed through the back gate, worked like a charm.
The first picture is on the MUNI the morning of love fest which was completely PACKED, and the other two are at a friend of a friends house near haight. I wish responsibility didnt have to come into play, so I could drop everything and rent a studio somewhere downtown. I think Someday ill be there.
